PTI’s Asad Qaiser released from Central Prison Mardan after Swabi DC withdraws detention order

Former National Assembly (NA) speaker and PTI leader Asad Qaiser was released from jail on Wednesday following the withdrawal of his detention order under the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance (MPO). The Peshawar High Court (PHC) had directed Swabi Deputy Commissioner (DC) Tariqullah a day ago to withdraw his detention orders for Qaiser and warned that non-compliance would lead to action. The DC’s release order, a copy of which is available with Daw.com was issued today on the condition that Qaiser would not disturb the peace, instigate the public against the government, raise slogans against state institutions, abide by the home department’s standard operating procedures and that he would produce bail bond worth Rs100,000 with two sureties each, along with an affidavit that Qaiser would not disturb the district’s peace and tranquility. Qaiser was initially arrested on November 3 at his Banigala residence on charges of causing losses to the national exchequer through procurem...

US may yet back ‘mild ceasefire’ for Gaza

UNITED NATIONS: The emergency UN Security Council meeting on the Gaza situation was adjourned on Tuesday, with discussions entering into informal consultations as hopes rise of a slight flexibility in Washington’s otherwise staunch support for Israel. The council’s meeting, which started on Monday for a vote on UAE’s resolution calling for a sustainable cessation of hostilities in Gaza, was postponed due to US concerns over the draft’s phrasing. While the US administration was still hesitant to endorse a “cessation of hostilities,” it has shown openness to a milder “suspension of hostilities.” This shift in stance reflects deepening divisions within the US government, with growing discontent, particularly from the global South. In a departure from its previous stance, the White House’s willingness to consider alternative wording suggests frustration with Israel’s approach. Despite diplomatic efforts, Israel’s approach has faced criticism, and pressure has been mounting on the U...

Usman Dar’s mother accuses Khawaja Asif of ‘orchestrating’ police raid at Sialkot home

Former PTI leader Usman Dar’s mother on Tuesday accused PML-N stalwart Khawaja Asif and the police of raiding their Sialkot home and manhandling her. Asif and the Sialkot police denied the allegations. Earlier in the day, Usman shared a video of his mother on social media platform X in which she called on Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa to take notice of the alleged incident. “It is my appeal … that I was asleep at home and yet again, Khawaja Asif orchestrated an attack on my house,” she said while pointing to a broken door frame, adding that the alleged attackers entered after trying to force their way in. She said the attackers manhandled, adding that such tactics would not force her to “comply” and she would still submit her nomination for the February 8 general elections. “It is my appeal to you [chief justice] that [take notice of] what is happening and ask these people if this is our Pakistan?” she said before challenging Asif to face her in the electoral battlegrou...

THIS screengrab from a video shared by Samirul Islam, a member of the upper house, Rajya Sabha, shows suspended MPs sitting in protest on the stairs of the parliament building, in New Delhi.—X / Samirul Islam NEW DELHI: When Bertolt Brecht wrote his acid account of the subversion of democracies by autocratic regimes, he would have hardly had the Indian parliament in mind. In a move that would make the legendary German playwright’s spirit squirm, the two houses of India’s parliament on Monday saw the suspension of a total of 78 opposition MPs taking the toll of suspended MPs from December 15 to 92. While 33 MPs were suspended in the Lok Sabha, 45 were suspended in the Rajya Sabha. On December 14, a total of 14 MPs (13 in Lok Sabha and one in Rajya Sabha) were suspended. The suspensions come as both houses of parliament saw repeated adjournments amid calls from opposition MPs for a statement from Union home minister Amit Shah on the security breach in parliament on December 13, wh...

Nawaz hints at bringing ‘Shehbaz speed’ to Karachi

LAHORE: Hinting that the party may field his younger brother as a candidate from Karachi, PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif on Monday asked residents of the city by the sea why they ignored his party in the polls even though it had served them best. Addressing ticket aspirants from Sindh at the party’s provincial secretariat in Model Town on Monday, he boasted of all the development work carried out in Lahore under Shehbaz Sharif’s watch, adding that no such project was completed in Karachi. “We maintained peace and ended terrorism in Karachi. We made a tunnel in Chitral, but when the elections took place the people voted for someone else... why?” he asked, adding that his government had also set up a 2,200MW power plant in Sindh and also made electricity from coal there. Drawing a comparison between his brother’s development works in Punjab with those in Karachi, the elder Sharif said: “Why no progress is made in Karachi... not a single water project was completed while we had initiated t...
